Conference On OBOR and CPEC “The Resolution of Commercial and Investment Disputes” Held at UMT Lahore

The Center for International Investment and Commercial Arbitration (CIICA) and UMT School of Law and Policy (SLP), held international conference, titled “OBOR and CPEC: The Resolution of Commercial and Investment Disputes”, at University of Management and Technology, Lahore.

The conference brought together lawyers from Pakistan, UK, and ; representatives of and Chinese business communities; engineers, economists, policy makers and government officials. The conference provided a forum for discussing and analyzing the relevant issues involved in current and prospective disputes in connection with the substantial under the OBOR, in general, and CPEC, in particular.

In their opening remarks, both Syed Imad-ud-din Asad, Director, SLP and Rana Sajjad, Founder & President, CIICA, highlighted the significance of the conference in raising awareness of critical issues involving dispute resolution under the CPEC framework.

The conference speakers discussed current global alternate dispute resolution regimes, with a focus on the advantages and disadvantages of each and the mechanism that would be most suitable from the standpoint of the needs and preferences of Pakistani companies.

In addition, panelists pointed out the potential risks in failing to clearly stipulating effective mechanisms for dispute resolution in the contract. Conference attendees stressed the need for updating and developing Pakistan’s laws on domestic and international arbitration. They also emphasized the dire need for developing capacity of Pakistani lawyers in arbitration in particular and alternate dispute resolution in general.

Conference speakers included Francis Xavier SC who is Regional Head, Disputes Practices at Rajah & Tann, Singapore, Vice President of the Inter Pacific Bar Association and Former Chairman (Singapore Branch) of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators; Saadia Bhatty who is Counsel at Gide Loyrette Nouel in the United Kingdom; Arshad Ghaffar, Barrister and Arbitrator XXIV Old Buildings, London, Barrister Ali Zafar, Former President of the Supreme Court Bar Association of Pakistan and Zulfiqar Ali, Director of the , Government of Pakistan and S.M. Naveed, President of the Pak China Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry.
