First Ever Chinese Ambassador Scholarship Established at QAU

Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan, HE Sun Weidong inaugurated the Chinese Ambassador Scholarship for undergraduate and MPhil students at the School of Politics and International Relations (SPIR), Quaid-i-Azam University (QAU), Islamabad.

In this regard a memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed by the Chinese ambassador and QAU Vice Chancellor DrJaved Ashraf.

Speaking on the ground-breaking occasion, Ambassador Weidong said the scholarship to the tune of US$29,500 was the “first of its kind” offered by the Chinese Embassy to students of a public sector university in Pakistan. In an academic year, each of the ten selected students enrolled in the under-graduate and MPhil degree programs will receive an amount of Rs.150,000 on need and merit basis.

The Scholarship was established with the an aim to help students in the Quaid-i-Azam University with financial difficulties to finish their study, promote academic activity in Pakistan-China relations as well as nurture youth scholars for Pakistan-China friendship.
While addressing the students and faculty,the Chinese ambassador said that Pakistan and China are iron brothers as both countries has always trusted and supported each other. He said the friendship of both countries is deeply rooted in the hearts of its people.

“This friendship has entered in to a new stage of ground development in the form of CPEC under which 17 major projects have been started across the country. These projects would bring a major change in socio economic development of Pakistan, offering enormous employment opportunities, fulfilling the dreams of the skilled youth,” he added.

Earlier,DrIshtiaq Ahmad, Director SPIR, welcomed the ambassador and briefed him about the department. He said the School is developing academic links with Chinese universities while the department is also developing the curriculum for teaching Chinese studies, in line with the promising shift in Sino-Pak ties from state-led security cooperation to people-centric corridor economy.

Vice Chancellor Dr. Ashraf thanked the ambassador for selecting Quaid-i-Azam University to establish the ambassador scholarship, while referring to President Xi Jinping’s characterization of Pakistan and China as “Iron Brothers.” Dean Faculty of Social Sciences Dr.SayedWiqar Ali Shah also addressed the ceremony. A large number of students and faculty members attend the ceremony.
